Museum of Unlimited Growth

Le Corbusier’s project for the Museum of Unlimited Growth is one of the earliest antecedents of an architecture oriented towards the future. Although Le Corbusier illustrates it with the shell of a mollusc, he does not do so out of its proportional or harmonic order, but by the evolution of its shape. However, the evolution of the project is associated with a phased construction that leaves no room for novelty or mutation. Each stage is defined solely by the size of the surface that is needed. In spite of being oriented towards the future, this system is still a linear and reversible process, in the same sense as Newtonian physics. Le Corbusier, conscious that the sign of the times begins to demand architectures that are capable of being extended, raises the project as a proposal of growth of a building and not as an evolutionary system. We will still have to wait a few more years before we can start talking not only about growth but also about change.

El proyecto de Le Corbusier para el Museo de crecimiento infinito es uno de los primeros antecedentes de una arquitectura orientada hacia el futuro. Aunque Le Corbusier lo ilustra con la concha de un molusco, no lo hace por su orden proporcional o armónico sino por la evolución de su forma,Sin embargo, la evolución del proyecto está asociada a una construcción por fases que no deja lugar a la novedad o a la mutación. Cada estadio se define exclusivamente por el tamaño de la superficie que se necesita. Un sistema que aunque orientado al futuro no deja de ser un proceso lineal y reversible, en el mismo sentido que la física newtoniana. Le Corbusier, consciente de que el signo de los tiempos empieza a demandar arquitecturas que sean capaces de ser ampliadas, plantea el proyecto como una propuesta de crecimiento de un edificio y no como un sistema evolutivo. Todavía habrá que esperar unos años para poder empezar a hablar no sólo de crecimiento sino también de cambio.
