Of Buckminster Fuller’s enormous and interdisciplinary output, his theory known as Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science is the most ambitious of them all. Based on a holistic (Comprehensive) and integrative view of the parts (Design) it aimed to anticipate the states of crisis (Anticipatory) through a mathematical and systematic logic (Science). Buckminster Fuller advanced the first ideas on the necessity of the reduction of the consumption of natural resources for the preservation of the Earth or of the “spaceship Earth.” In this sense, design science was a preventive and non curative strategy that tried a better relationship and organization between Humans and their environment.
De toda la ingente e interdisciplinar producción de BuckminsterFullerpuede que su teoría conocida como Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science sea la más ambiciosa de todas ellas. Basada en una visión holística (Comprehensive)e integradora de las partes (Design) tenía como objetivo anticiparse a los estados de crisis (Anticipatory)mediante una lógica matemática y sistemática (Science). Buckminster Fuller avanzó las primeras ideas sobre la necesidad de la reducción del consumo de recursos naturales para la preservación del planeta tierra o de “la nave espacial tierra.” En este sentido la design science era una estrategia preventiva y no curativa que pretendía una mejor relación y organización entre los seres humanos y su entorno.
Although the germinal ideas of this theory arose in the year 1927, it is convenient to emphasize the workshop organized in the year 1956 in the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) about the systematics of the Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science, directed to architects, engineers, industrial designers, scientific and chemical. The current validity of many of Fuller’s ideas is surprising, and specifically those that are collected in the subject syllabus where he defines the eight strategies this theory is based on.
Aunque las ideas germinales de esta teoría surgen en el año 1927, resulta conveniente destacar el curso que organiza en el año 1956 en el MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) sobre la sistemática de la Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science, dirigido a arquitectos, ingenieros, diseñadores industriales, científicos y químicos. No deja de sorprender la vigencia actual de muchas de las ideas de Fuller, y en concreto las que se recogen en el syllabus de la asignatura donde define las ocho estrategias sobre las que se basa esta teoría.
Fuller introduces for the first time the concept of anticipation associated with a creative or design process, but instead of solving problems is going ahead of them. Later on, Cedric Price will inherit and reinterpret many of Fuller’s proposals, including the architecture of anticipation as a strategy to generate new and unexpected opportunities. Sanford Kwinter points out not only that Fuller’s theories are closer to Clerk-Maxwell or Boltzmann than to Violet-le-duc, but they are probably ahead of René Thom’s morphogenetic theories. Fuller understood design as a holistic process formed by energy and information. A primitive form also of the present theories of the complexity oriented to the prediction of future perturbations.
Fuller introduce por primera vez el concepto de anticipación asociado a un proceso creativo o de diseño, pero que en vez de resolver problemas se adelanta a ellos. Posteriormente Cedric Price heredará y reinterpretará muchas de las propuestas de Fuller, entre ellas la arquitectura de la anticipación como estrategia para generar nuevas e inesperadas oportunidades. Sanford Kwinter señala no sólo que las teorías de Fuller están más cerca de Clerk-Maxwell o Boltzmann que de Violet-le-duc, sino que probablemente se adelantan a las teorías morfogenéticas de René Thom. Fuller entendía el diseño como un proceso holístico formado por energía e información. Una forma primigenia también de las actuales teorías de la complejidad orientadas a la predicción de futuras perturbaciones.
